Out of the Rain book review by Joanne Olivieri
Out of the Rain is an inspiring anthology of poetry, stories, drawings and photography by the homeless in San Francisco. The works were compiled by the St. Vincent dePaul shelter in the city.
I found this book in a used bookstore decades ago and it is the most inspiring and insightful book I have ever read.
The works included within these pages give you a glimpse of life on the streets in San Francisco through the hearts and minds of people living on our streets.
These artists are no different than we are. They have regrets, fears, hopes, dreams and invaluable minds. The only difference is that we have a warm blanket and a roof over our heads at night when they are braving the cold and crime ridden streets sleeping in doorways. How many of us are that brave???
As a reader you will come to understand and carry the weight of their burdens on your shoulder and become grateful each day for that warm blanket and hot meal you enjoy.
You will see the homeless in a new light and realize that the life you have, no matter the circumstances should have you waking up each day giving thanks you are alive.
This book is important and inspirational and a must read for everyone, especially during these tumultuous times in which we live.
There are varied poetical styles contained within the pages of this book. Each is unique with a clear and decisive message. The artwork and photography reflect life as these creative souls experience each day. It is truly a work of art by people who are more often than not, ignored by many people.
This book personally is a gift for me because each time I read one of these works I give thanks for what I have, each day.
This is an important and must read for everyone.
